Hyde Park Dental Implants

Almost everyone is a good candidate for dental implants. In order to be qualified for a dental implant, you need adequate bone in your jaw and free from periodontal disease. Dental implants are not recommended for the following people:

•    Those with autoimmune diseases who need to take medication for these conditions

•    Smokers

•    Those with unmanaged diabetes

•    Those who are immunocompromised

•    Those who had radiation therapy on their neck or head in the past

What happens during dental implant surgery?

•    First, your damage tooth or teeth, if any, will be extracted.

•    Next, your jawbone will then be prepared for surgery. An incision will be made in your gums to expose the bone in your jaw. If you do not have sufficient bone in your jaw, you may need to undergo a bone grafting procedure.

•    Once your jawbone heals, a dental implant titanium post is placed in your jawbone under the gum.

•    The healing process will last for several months.

•    After the healing period, an abutment is placed inside as an extension of the titanium post. If the implant is already stable, the abutment can be put on the same day as the titanium post.

•    Once the soft tissue heals, a mold of your teeth and jawbone will be made; after which the final tooth or teeth can be placed.

Is the dental implant procedure painful?

Dental implant surgery is an outpatient procedure that usually takes 30 to 60 minutes per implant. With the help of local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and other sedatives, the patient’s entire mouth will be numb; thus, you will not feel any pain at all and only experience mild discomfort. However, if you have to undergo a bone grafting procedure, you will feel more discomfort as this tends to cause subsequent tenderness. After the procedure, you will be prescribed antibiotics and over the counter pain medication such as paracetamol, mefenamic acid, or ibuprofen to ensure that no infection will occur.
