Food to Avoid After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure that is usually performed when the mouth is not wide enough to fit emerging teeth. With all the advancements in oral hygiene, plus softer diets, these teeth are no longer necessary. Some scientists predict that eventually humans will stop having wisdom teeth all together!

The average mouth can hold twenty-eight teeth. But with wisdom teeth, there are thirty-two teeth that can result in some crowding. It is important to look for signs or symptoms to see if you need your wisdom teeth pulled. If a patient’s mouth is not big enough, teeth may partially emerge or come in improperly aligned, causing damage to other teeth and the jaw. If you need to have your wisdom teem removed, here some foods and drinks to avoid after extraction.

Hot or Spicy Foods

Heated foods and drinks can irritate the extraction location, and trigger blood flow. Spicy foods can have a similar reaction and cause even more irritation depending on the spices used. Foods such as vegetable soup, mashed potatoes and pasta can be eaten at a slightly warmed or room temperature. Other recommended soft foods are yogurt, milk shakes, and smoothies.

Soda and Carbonated Drinks

Soda and carbonated drinks can weaken the blood clots needed for healing and can spread them in your mouth. Drinking from a straw is also not recommended since the pressure can irritate the extraction area.

Alcohol

Alcohol can delay the healing process, and should be avoided for 24+ hours after the extraction.  Premature alcohol consumption could result in pain and swelling. Alcoholic beverages could also interfere with the effects of prescribed pain medications.

Small Grains or Seeds

Foods that have small particles like sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and rice can get stuck in the tooth sockets. To avoid infection, refrain from eating these kinds of foods until the area has fully healed.
